Why Waipa?

Why not?!

There are dozens of reasons why your event should be held in Waipa – here’s just seven of them!

1. Because we have world class facilities!

You want world-class facilities?  No problem! Whether it’s the Avantidrome, Lake Karapiro or the Mystery Creek Events Centre, Waipa is awash with seriously brilliant facilities. We already host some of the world’s most prestigious sporting events including elite equestrian competition at the Kihikihi Equestrian Centre, world championship rowing, World Cup cycling and the national Waka Ama Championships.

We’ve got a huge range of local sports grounds and facilities including the Trust Waikato Swimming and Events Centre and the historic Cambridge Town Hall.  Whether your event is big or small, don’t sweat it. Nothing’s a problem in Waipa.

2. Because this is a perfect location!

What’s not to love? Waipa is smack-bang in the middle of the Golden Triangle, in that magic zone between Hamilton, Auckland and Tauranga.

That means your event is within coo-ee of millions of people…and wait, they’re all coming!

Auckland? Less than two hours drive time. Hamilton?  Say 20 minutes. Tauranga or Rotorua?  Allow just over an hour. Add on another 35 minutes to Taupo.

Oh, you prefer to fly? No problem. Hamilton’s Airport is actually in the Waipa District (ssshhh, say nothing) making New Zealand and the rest of the world just a boarding pass away.

3. Because there’s so much to do!

It can’t be all work and no play! Chill out a little. Waipa boasts some of New Zealand’s best natural playgrounds including Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, Mount Kakepuku,  Mount Pirongia, Lake Ngaroto and Yarndley’s Bush.

Fancy shopping? Check out the gorgeous boutique shops in Cambridge and Te Awamutu and pick up your fresh produce at a Farmer’s Market.  Farm tours? Horse stud tours? Orchard tours?  River, lake or walking activities? Sure, no problem. Slow down a little and smell the roses at the world-class Te Awamutu Rose Gardens.

4. Because everything you need is right here!

Let’s be practical – and we are! Waipa has all the infrastructure and the facilities you need to make any event, big or small, a success.

We can accommodate your participants, spectators and guests in accommodation ranging from motels to luxury escapes. We've got a growing reputation as a foodie destination, with a huge range of eateries to suit any and all budgets. Our shopping centres will satisfy the most ardent consumer and we’re stacked with local know-how and suppliers who can magic up any solution to (nearly) any problem!

Transportation? Easy. Accommodation? Easy. Recreation? Oh… so easy!

5. Because the Council is committed!

We won’t deny it. Waipa District Council LOVES events. We love the vibrancy they bring to our district. We love being awash with visitors! We love the buzz and the economic boost they bring to our people and to our local economy.

In fact, we like events so much (all types of events) we’ve got a District Promotions Fund set up to help fund them….and dedicated events staff to help run them!

We’ll even help promote your event, because we want it be just as successful as you do.

(I know – we can’t believe it either!)

6. Because Waipa has done it before!

World Rowing Championships (twice) – tick. Maadi Cup – tick. Waka Ama national championships – tick. World Cup track cycling – tick. National and international equestrian competition – tick. Multi-sport events – tick. School boy rugby – tick.  Festival, art exhibitions, local events – tick, tick, tick!

2017 World Master’s Games? Yes, that’s coming too!

7. Because there are potential partners to work with!

Events are hard work, we know that. But come to Waipa, and you won’t have to do it on your own.

We’ll do our best to hook you up with potential partners who may be willing (and able) to help ensure your event is the best it can possibly be.
