A time to remember the past, nourish the present, and plan for the future
Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster also known as the Pleiades, whose midwinter rise marks the Māori New Year. Celebrated across the Pacific, this season is a time for reflection, renewal, and connection.
Traditionally, Matariki signalled the preparation of māra kai (food gardens), the sharing of kai, and planning for the year ahead. It is also a sacred time to remember ancestors who have passed.
Now recognised as a national public holiday, Matariki affirms the enduring significance of te Ao Māori. Join us in celebrating this time through exhibition, storytelling, and creative expression — coming together to reflect, remember, and look forward.
